Philosophy of Teaching My goals as a teacher are to help students communicate effectively and foster a desire to learn. I believe these two characteristics are important for students to have because despite what problems they encounter or what situation they are in, the ability to communicate effectively will help them in working with others and the desire to learn will motivate them to make positive changes in their life. As a teacher, I want my students to become interested in learning, both in school and in their personal lives. With these two goals in mind, my role as a teacher is to help them acquire these skills and values. However, effective communication is one of the hardest tasks for teachers because we all communicate in†¦show more content†¦Thus, the cultural differences between the students and these civilizations in the past become a major barrier because students have trouble drawing connections to them. At the most basic level, students only memorize the information and dates in the textbook; however, this neglects the more important objective in social studies, which is for them to appreciate and understand how people from the past have impacted their lives. Because of my own cultural background, one of the greatest opportunities for me as a history teacher is to share with my students about the cultural diversity and accomplishments from the past. However, students of all different cultural backgrounds have their own predispositions and biases about other cultures; consequently, it is hard to discuss the events and peoples in the past that have little direct connection with students today. I believe that the challenge of finding ways to help students comprehend how people lived in the past is a great opportunity for me to discover ways to utilize my experience as an immigrant to help students make connections with cultures that are not their own. Also, effective communication is important for students because when they talk with each other about different cultures, it teaches them how to break down the prejudice and ignorance of those around them.
